Summary The Department of Social Sciences invites applications for a LEO Lecturer I, non-tenure-track appointment which begins September 1, 2024 through December 31, 2024 for the Fall 2024 term. Contractual full-time rate per term is $25,500; term salary is dependent on number of courses taught and course effort percentage, up to 66.67% appointment for the Fall 2024 term. The successful candidate will be comfortable teaching in a variety of modalities for the following History/African and African American Studies Course: AAAS/HIST 316 African American History I: 1619-1865 at 33.33% effort AAAS/HIST 369 Civil Rights Movement in America at 33.33% effort AAAS/HIST 316 is an upper-level undergraduate course. This course traces the experience of African Americans from their first landing in Virginia in 1619 through slavery and the Civil War. Emphasis will be placed on the origins of racism, the development of the slave system in the United States and the historical developments that led to the Civil War.AAAS/HIST 316 counts for 4 credits and is scheduled to run in an asynchronous online course: all course activities will be happening online.AAAS/HIST 369 is an upper-level undergraduate course. A survey of race relations and civil rights activity from the late 19th century to the present. The principal focus, however, is on the period since World War II, especially on the mass-based Southern civil rights movement (1955-1965) and the various policy debates and initiatives of the past thirty years, most notably affirmative action and busing. We also examine critiques of non-violence and integrationism.AAAS/HIST 369 counts for 4 credits and is currently scheduled to run as an in-person course meeting in a classroom on Mondays and Wednesdays 12:00-1:45 p.m.This is a one-semester non-tenured LEO Lecturer I Appointment, with no presumption of renewal. The Fall 2024 semester runs September 1, 2024 through December 31, 2024. Who We Are The University of Michigan-Dearborn (UM-Dearborn) is one of the three campuses of the University of Michigan. Responsibilities* This is an instructional position. Duties include the preparation of lectures and other classroom activities, development of assignments, evaluation of students? coursework, holding office hours and communicating with students in AAAS/HIST 316 and AAAS/HIST 369 courses throughout the semester. UM-Dearborn uses the Canvas course management software, and the instructor will be expected to assemble and maintain a Canvas site for each of the two courses. Required Qualifications* At a minimum, candidates should hold an MA in African American Studies with a concentration in history or an MA in history with a concentration in African American studies. A demonstrated record of effective teaching. Desired Qualifications* PhD in history or African-American Studies Three years of teaching college-level courses Additional coursework or training in a sociocultural area of African American life, e.g., labor or political movements, music history. Union Affiliation This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Lecturers Employee Organization, AFL-CIO, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
