­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­Announcement # 2024-152 Issue Date: 05-13-24 Closing Date: 05-24-24 Wildlife Technician III (Spotted Owl) (2) Two Positions Wildlife Department of Natural Resources Hourly Wage: $16.53/Temporary/Full-Time Responsible for field collection of biological data as required for spotted owl research and management on the Yakama Reservation. Duties include monitoring owls by radiotelemetry, deploying remote survey equipment, assisting with owl capture, and marking, conducting daytime and nighttime owl calling surveys, sampling forest vegetation, and maintaining field equipment. Examples of Work Performed: Successful applicants should be prepared to work with a partner or alone in the forest at night under adverse weather conditions. Monitoring spotted owls by radio telemetry. Conducting nighttime hooting surveys for spotted owls. Sampling forest vegetation. Following complex written and oral instructions in order to collect data, operate field equipment, and process data. Assisting with the capture and handling of spotted owls. Reviewing data sheets for completeness and accuracy and processing data. Reading maps and orienteering. Operating and maintaining field equipment, including vehicles, radio-telemetry equipment, snowmobiles, GPS devices, acoustic detection equipment, etc. Other duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Successful applicants must be comfortable working alone in the forest under adverse conditions. Applicants must be trustworthy and must maintain a high degree of confidentiality because of the sensitive nature of the spotted owl project. Must be able to read topographic maps; knowledge of the Yakama Reservation closed area is highly desirable. Must be able to record field data legibly and accurately. Ability to operate radiotelemetry equipment, remote game cameras, GPS equipment, four-wheel drive vehicles, quads, and snowmobiles is desirable. Ability and desire to learn to operate and deploy advanced remote sensing equipment. Ability to identify forest wildlife and plants is desirable. Minimum Requirements: A high school diploma or equivalent, some college level training in natural resources, or experience conducting wildlife surveys is required. Outdoor experience including wilderness hiking, backpacking, or hunting. Physical ability to hike long distances while carrying up to 10 pounds through difficult terrain. Experience operating manual transmission 4-wheel drive vehicles. Must possess a valid Washington State Driver's License with the ability to obtain a Yakama Nation Driving permit. Required to pass a pre-employment drug test. Preferred Requirements: Enrolled Yakama Preference, but all qualified applicants are encouraged to apply.
