Title: Lower School Dyslexia and Academic Support Specialist (K-5) Purpose: To provide academic support to individuals and small groups of students using researched-based instructional strategies and methods based on identified student needs to guide the learning process toward improved student confidence and success in learning. Accountability: Reports to the Lower School Principal FLSA Status: Exempt, Monday - Thursday (72.5% load) Qualifications: Must be a Christ-follower who upholds, in word and deed, the Hill Country Christian School of Austin’s Core Values and Statement of Faith. Must faithfully attend a church whose fundamental beliefs agree with this school's Statement of Faith. A bachelor’s degree is required. Must possess sufficient biblical knowledge that enables the teacher to integrate Scripture into subjects taught, thus imparting to the students a biblical worldview. Must be a Certified Academic Language Therapist or Certified Academic Language Practitioner. Must have completed Take Flight training. Experience and training in literacy and math intervention. Proficiency in computer and technology applications necessary for the teaching profession. Must have strong collaboration skills. Must have strong instructional skills, including oral and written communication. Display a strong work ethic, be self-motivated, and have effective multi-tasking and time management skills. Responsibilities: Work with the ARCC team, principal, and teachers to identify students who qualify for ARCC services and those who need additional testing such as an Educational and Neurological Psych Evaluation. Provide dyslexia services to Year 1 and Year 2 students of Take Flight. Work with K - 1 students in the BUILD program (pre-Take Flight). Meet with parents to recommend Educational and Neurological Psych Evaluations for students with learning differences and disabilities. Identify students who only need academic support and meet with parents to discuss ARCC services. Review and interpret student Educational and Neurological Psych Evaluations and create a 504 with accommodations based on the outcome of the evaluation. Meet with parents, ARCC team, teachers, and psychologist (if available) to review evaluations and accommodations to be provided by the ARCC and classroom teachers. Meet with parents of any student who qualifies for ARCC services and explain the process for enrollment. Plan and prepare daily lessons for addressing the needs of students. Support teachers in the classroom with lessons that will help students bridge what they are learning in the ARCC to the classroom. Allocate and maintain resources needed for ARCC training and instruction. Plan weekly schedule with ARCC team and teachers for the best time(s) to pull students for academic support. Ensure monitoring of students to and from their classrooms. Conduct progress monitoring for each student at designated times during the year and provide that information to the principal. Meet with the principal quarterly to discuss the progress of all ARCC students. Attend professional development to enhance knowledge of pedagogy and content. Establish and promote high Christian standards and expectations for all students and peer staff to encourage excellent academic performance and Godly character. Conduct yourself in the highest Christ-like behavior and decorum consistent with a professional school environment in all interactions with students, parents, and school staff. Establish a professional rapport with students and staff that maintains their respect and demonstrates pride in the education profession. Ensure a safe, orderly educational environment that encourages students to take responsibility for Christ-like behavior. Actively participate in a student discipline process that is constructive, encourages Christ-like behavior and restores relationships. Provide timely and active participation in all staff and/or department meetings to facilitate open and harmonious communication. Help maintain an inventory system for all school materials and equipment. Ensure students and staff care for and respect the school’s physical facilities. Address any staff, student, or parent issues in accordance with the principles set forth in Matthew 18 as commanded by Jesus Christ. Avoid, as much as is practicable, “one on one” discussions with students in closed rooms with no other students or staff present to protect the interests of both the student, the teacher, and the school. Notify the head of school, appropriate principal, and nurse immediately and any appropriate agencies when there is evidence of substance abuse, child abuse, child neglect, severe medical or social conditions, potential suicide or students appearing to be under the influence of alcohol or controlled substances. Notify school officials and administration immediately when any behavior that is a physical risk to other staff, faculty, or students is observed or discovered either directly or indirectly. Other duties as assigned. Physical Requirements: Frequently move about inside campus buildings and outside on the grounds. Frequently operate a computer and a printer/copy machine. Frequently communicate with co-workers and others. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations, whether in person, via email or telephone. Possess physical stamina required to fulfill the professional obligations of the teaching profession and their specific faculty assignment. Occasional lifting of 5 to 30 pounds. Must be flexible and adapt to various classroom settings and learning styles, schedules, and changes. Possible exposure to a variety of childhood and adult diseases and illnesses.
