We are currently seeking a Research Specialist to join the lab of Dr. Scott Sternson at The University of California, San Diego. The Sternson lab's research investigates how the brain controls appetite. They study multiple circuits throughout the brain as well as the interactions between neural systems that mediate hunger, thirst, stress, and addiction. Critical to this effort, the lab develops novel chemogenetic methods based on engineering ion channel-ligand interactions. Their goal is to use these detailed chemogenetic tools to develop research and gene therapy tools for obesity, addiction, and other neurological disorders. The lab also uses electrophysiology for optogenetic neural circuit mapping to characterize the synaptic connections between molecularly defined cell types involved in motivated behaviors. More information can be found on their website https://sternsonlab.com/ About the role:In this role, you will be integral to the functioning of the lab and will assist the ongoing research focused on ex vivo patch clamp electrophysiology. In partnership with other researchers in the lab, in this role you will manage electrophysiological rigs, cellular transfection with ion channels, whole cell recordings in HEK cells, acute neuron cultures, and acute brain slices. Potential for contributions to scientific publications. What you bring:Master's degree in Biophysics, Biology, or a related field, or equivalent education and experience. PhD preferred but not required. Extensive experience with whole cell patch clamp electrophysiology. Some programming experience a strong plus for experiment control and data analysis. 1-5 years previous experience working in a hands-on research lab.Ability to work both independently and in a team setting.Good organizational and analytical skills, excellent fine motor skills, and strong attention to detail.Ability to follow protocols and maintain a detailed laboratory notebook.Willingness to learn.Knowledge of Matlab. Physical Requirements Remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extended periods of time; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) or arm(s); dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers, for example using a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word; ability to see and hear within normal parameters; ability to move about workspace. Compensation Range $67,540.00 (minimum) - $84,400.00 (midpoint) - $109,780.00 (maximum)Pay Type:AnnualHHMI's salary structure is developed based on relevant job market data. HHMI considers a candidate's education, previous experiences, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity when making job offers.
