What You Will Do As an Automation Technician you will perform a variety of troubleshooting and repair services on electronic instrumentation used in the automation of large industrial processes. You will assist with most aspects of system integration including instrument calibrations, control panel/MCC troubleshooting, minor PLC/HMI programming modifications, VFD setup and commissioning, installation of replacement/new hardware to include instruments and PLC’s and terminating new hardware. Candidates will need to be able to identify parts and components for PLC, network, computer, and software components; programming PLCs and HMIs; testing functionality of program logic and installed equipment; troubleshooting software and systems issues. A Typical Day at Prime Controls Read and interpret diagrams and documentation and communicates with customers to understand objectives and preferences. Modify existing PLC programs in Ladder, Function Block, and other languages. Modify human machine interface (HMI) and develop small applications. Tests the installed system to observe system functionality and ensure that the programs function as designed. Troubleshoots problems that occur and could be caused by incorrect drawings, changes in customer desires, incorrect instrumentation specifications, or other technical issues. Diagnoses and resolves software and hardware interface issues. Interfaces with manufacturers and vendors of software and application products, particularly regarding problem diagnosis and resolution. Works with others to address design problems as necessary. Will respond to service calls to troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair programming and system failures. Performs a variety of instrumentation services, troubleshooting, calibration, and testing by traveling to and from customer sites. Troubleshoots instrumentation functionality and I/O operation. Repairs instrumentation, typically involving calibration using a variety of meters and tools. Sets up new instrumentation and calibrates to specifications using schematics and drawings. Performs preventive and corrective maintenance of test apparatus and peripheral equipment. Assists with a variety of related installation and maintenance projects for automating large industrial processes. Uses computerized equipment and software to perform testing functions and produce reports. The employee needs to be able to spend 10 hours on their feet walking and attending to duties and equipment throughout the jobsite. They need to be able to climb ladders and step on platforms and equipment.
