Mayor's Summer Youth Jobs Program Job Description Position Title: Summer Youth Parks Maintenance Worker Assistant Department: Parks and Recreation Location: Cato Park Number of open positions: 2 Anticipated Start Date: June 3, 2024 End Date: August 9, 2024 Hours of work per week : up to 35 hours Business/Work Hours: 7:00 am - 3:00pm Mon-Fri Pay Rate: $12.00 General Description: The purpose of this class within the organization is to implement a variety of community, recreational, cultural, special events, and other programs at City of Charleston designated facilities for youth ages 16 - 20 years of age. Program employment dates are June 3, 2024 - August 9, 2024 and may be extended based on employee availability and departmental needs. Work hours: Maximum 35 hours per week. This class works under close supervision according to set procedures. Responsibilities, tasks, and projects: Cuts and trims grass using various fuel and hand held tools and equipment. Picks up and discards tree branches, debris and/or items. Assist with minor facility maintenance projects such as, but not limited to, painting, plumbing, replacing light bulbs and filters, cleaning offices, recreation centers, parks and/or other designated areas, emptying trash, cleaning water drains, and cleaning restrooms.Checks and monitors playgrounds and parks for trash, debris, and broken play equipment.Assist with any swimming pool maintenance. Must be at least 17 years of age. Candidate requirements: Ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Ability to walk and sit up to 8 hours per day. Must have reliable transportation. Must be able to operate grass trimmers and push lawn mower. Must be able to operate simple hand held tools Dress Code: Parks and Recreation provided t-shirt, long sleeved shirt, or sweatshirt. Comfortable tops and bottoms without holes or excessive wear Hard Toe boots or shoes No shirts showing the mid-drift or chest area Jean pants or cargo pants Core Competencies: Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Accountability - takes responsibility for own actions. Adaptability - responds positively to change. Communications - listens, speaks and/or writes in a clear, concise and respectful manner. Customer Service - provides courteous, accessible and quality assistance to internal and external customers. Initiative - takes proactive action to complete work or resolve issues Judgment & Decision Making - evaluates issues and makes sound factual decisions. Professional Development - seeks opportunities to enhance technical skills and job knowledge. Teamwork & Cooperation - collaborates with others to fulfill the City's vision and achieve departmental goals and strategic objectives. Additional Qualifications: Must have the ability to provide documentation verifying legal work status. Ability to read and speak the English language proficiently in order to communicate and interact with others; to understand and interpret safety instructions; and to respond to internal and external inquiries. Ability to understand and comply with City and departmental guidelines, policies, procedures and expectations.
