Location:
Research Triangle Park
Description:

Job Summary The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), is recruiting a Senior Investigator to serve as the new Chief of the Center for Climate Change and Health Research (CCCHR) within the Division of Intramural Research. The NIEHS is located in Research Triangle Park (RTP), near the University of North Carolina, North Carolina State University, North Carolina Central University and Duke University. Intramural investigators study a wide range of important biologic processes related to effects of the environment on human health and carry out basic, population-level and clinical research linking environmental exposures and health. The CCCHR is a new trans-NIH center focused on addressing the impacts of climate change on human health. The goal of the CCCHR is to build a cadre of scientists in the NIH Intramural Research Program (IRP) interested in Climate Change and Health (CCH) research and foster cross-cutting and convergent research partnerships. The activities of the CCCHR are in line with the NIH Climate Change and Health Initiative and Strategic Framework , a coordinated effort to support research, training, and capacity building activities that address the climate crisis. The NIH is the premier biomedical research center for the world. Its 27 institutes and centers employ more than 18,000 employees doing a vast array of jobs, all supporting efforts for a healthy nation. Resources for establishment of the independent research laboratory of the Chief will be supplied as will access to all core facilities and research support at NIEHS. Resources for recruitment of new investigators to the CCCHR will be dependent on the availability of funds. Successful candidates must have appropriate skills to foster collaboration and team building with other researchers throughout the NIH to support the scientific interactions necessary to build a successful CCCHR. Principal Investigators in the NIH IRP can focus primarily on scientific research since they have no formal teaching requirements and are fully supported with internal funds. Applicants should have a Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent doctoral degree and a demonstrated interest in research focused on understanding the biological mechanisms underlying the effects of climate change on health.
