Overseeing the College’s annual operating budget of approximately $22 million, the CFO is responsible for debt management, budget, financial accounting, coordination of oversight for investments, risk management, human resources, facilities management, vendor management and contract management.The CFO serves on the President’s Cabinet and is staff liaison to three committees of the Board of Trustees: Audit, Business Affairs, and Endowment and Investment.The CFO supervises the Director of Human Resources and all of the HR functions of the College, including payroll and benefit services. The CFO oversees the Associate Vice President for Business Services, Controller and general accounting, accounts payable, student accounts, and purchasing services. The CFO has responsibility for all financial services related to the College including the outsourced functions of campus dining, copy center, and facilities management.The CFO develops the College’s annual budget in cooperation with the senior leadership of the College, prepares iterative budget projections, and maintains a ten-year rolling budget model.The Chief Financial Officer will serve as a strong and creative strategic partner to the President, and the college leadership team. In this role the CFO will have the responsibility of leading the college to a position of financial health, and ultimately prosperity, in full support of the fulfillment of its central educational mission.In this time of significant challenges to small, private, rural liberal arts colleges, the CFO will be expected to be a key strategic partner to the President and to provide strong leadership as the College addresses challenges and opportunities. The college seeks to face these challenges and opportunities head-on, achieving a financial stability that results from strong educational quality, sound financial management, effective enrollment management, and innovation that leads to revenue growth. Specific challenges and opportunities facing the new Vice President / Chief Financial Officer include: Strategic management of the budget, positioning the college to achieve the optimal approach to maintaining and increasing educational quality while maintaining a firm commitment to live within its means. Provide leadership in helping the college identify and capitalize on more efficient means of managing its operations. Provide the financial analysis necessary to inform and shape planning initiatives and strategic decision-making. Strengthen net assets and manage the College’s key financial ratios, including the Federal Composite Score. Review existing policies and procedures relating to financial management, make changes that are necessary to strengthen the service and support role of the financial division of the College. In addition to the specific leadership challenges, the Vice President for Finance and Chief Financial Officer will be expected to provide strong executive leadership in the following manner: Demonstrate a commitment to collaborative leadership, seeking positive solutions and cross-divisional input to attain the strategic goals of the College. Be an effective liaison with other areas of the College in developing sound business plans for those operational areas. Lead by example in support of the College’s commitment to a diverse workforce, professional development for employees, and the maintenance of a culture of student success and satisfaction throughout the institution. Advise the President, senior leadership, faculty, athletic personnel, and other college staff on matters concerning financial policies and procedures, budgeting, competitive benchmarking, efficiency analysis, and overall operations. Desired attributes of the successful candidate include: Expert financial acumen. Thorough understanding of a small college business model or demonstrated willingness and ability to develop a comprehensive and nuanced understanding of that business model. High level of integrity, energy, and commitment to the College. Willingness to embrace challenges and work strategically and collaboratively to advance the College. Collaborative and thoughtful leadership style. An ability to consistently, and without fail, to act with the College’s short- and long-term interests in mind. Detail oriented, with strong focus on accuracy and thoroughness. Strategic thinker, strong communicator, effective team member.
