The Computational Materials Group at CFDRC develops and applies computational tools to predict the performance of advanced material systems. This highly-skilled team is applying computational materials science and engineering principles such as ab initio, atomistic, and micro-/meso-scale solid mechanics to develop structure-property correlations and to improve material descriptions in computational engineering tools. This particular opening will focus on mesoscale computational solid mechanics and multiscale methods to develop improved macro scale constitutive models. We are seeking a highly motivated scientist or research engineer with expertise in computational solid mechanics to assist in the development of links between micro-/meso-scale simulations and design and analysis tools. The ideal candidate will be a team-oriented individual with a strong background in materials science, mechanical engineering or a related area. Specific responsibilities include: Lead thermomechanical analysis of materials under use conditions Collaborate with experts in first principles and atomistic methods to develop state-of-the-art constitutive models Formulate, implement and apply models for material degradation, damage and failure Design and implement multi-scale modeling tools to analyze and correlate material microstructure to performance and reliability Document technical activities and findings in reports and publications Contribute to future research through proposal preparation and by expanding existing technical capabilities Position Requirements: PhD in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, physics or related field Background in strength of materials, crystal plasticity or microscale fracture mechanics strongly preferred. Experience with continuum finite element analysis application, development and implementation Experience with applying and/or developing continuum mechanics methods to model material failure such as xFEM, cohesive zone methods, smooth particle hydrodynamics, peridynamics, DEM or particle based methods desirable Experience with scripting (i.e., Python) and programming (i.e., C++, C, or Fortran) parallel codes for HPC systems desirable Experience in using Abaqus FEA and developing user material subroutines preferred Ability to work collaboratively with teammates, government and industry partners, and stakeholders Strong verbal and written communication skills Experience with or interest in proposal writing and identifying & secruting research fudning is a plus Benefits: CFDRC offers competitive salaries and excellent employee benefits, including an employer matching 401(k) and Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP).
