Summary: The Parks and Recreation Irrigation Technician directly reports to the Parks Crew Leader. Under basic supervision, the Irrigation Technician assists in the maintenance, installation, and renovation of irrigation systems on parks, public building grounds, medians, and athletic fields. Special tasks such as event setup and cleanup or emergency situation response such as weather hazard prevention may be part of the duties of the Irrigation Technician as well. Other tasks may be assigned by the Leader and Director. The intent of this position description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by incumbent(s) in this position. Incumbent(s) duties may include, but are not limited to the following. Essential Job Duties: Diagnose and resolve issues with faulty irrigation components for municipal park properties. Maintenance and support of irrigation system components located in parks, public grounds, medians, entry points, sports complexes or the golf course, by ensuring proper operation, installation, and repair of components. Responsible for safe maintenance and operations of irrigation systems and components, while also providing protection for the public from hazards created by maintenance and repair operations. Responds to and resolves internally and externally generated work orders, complaints, and inquiries. Performs regularly scheduled inspection of irrigation systems and components. Installation of new irrigation systems and maintains daily work reports. Secures necessary supplies to complete each project or work order; learns to safely operate and utilize equipment and tools including but not limited to trenchers, wire locators, backhoes, skid steers, and chainsaws. May perform additional landscaping support duties and maintenance which may involve mowing, trimming, and utilizing light construction equipment. Other Important Duties: Perform related work and duties as directed or assigned. Be able to work weekends, holidays, and extended hours. Required Knowledge and Skills: Knowledge of park and recreational facility maintenance, repair, and construction methods and practices. Knowledge of occupational safety and health rules, regulations, practices and procedures. Effective oral and written communication skills. Requires the ability to coordinate, manage and execute multiple tasks. Requires the ability to operate, maneuver and/or control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools, and/or materials used in performing essential functions. Thorough knowledge of the tools and equipment used in the maintenance of lawns, trees, shrubbery, flower beds and other horticulture. Skill in planning and coordinating daily work activities. Thorough knowledge of the maintenance requirements of assigned equipment. Preferred Education, Experience, and Certifications: High school diploma or GED equivalent Must have a Texas Class C driver's license A minimum of six (6) months of experience in maintaining irrigation systems and landscaping An irrigation license or the ability to obtain one within six (6) months of employment Environmental Factors and Conditions/Physical Requirements: May be subject to exposure to extreme weather conditions (rain, cold), hazardous chemicals, fumes, air and water borne pathogens. Some tasks require exposure to dust and pollen. May be subject to climbing, bending, reaching, kneeling, digging, loading, unloading, transporting, lifting and carrying such as retrieving or replacing materials, tools, equipment and landscaping. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. Some tasks involve frequent walking, standing; and/or the operation of vehicles, office, shop, or hand tools in which manipulative skills and hand-eye coordination are important functions of safe and/or productive operations. Equipment and Tools Utilized: Knowledge of equipment used in maintenance duties for parks and recreation facilities. Safety equipment to properly maintain league and program safety. Various hand tools used to complete and repair playground equipment, structures and fences. Various heavy equipment such as ditching machines, backhoes, front loader and rollers.
