This involves ground-breaking efforts to cure intractable chronic diseases, enable dysfunctional organs to repair themselves, reverse damage caused by aging, and engineer tissues to resist infections or cancer. Launched in 2015 with a $114M grant from the Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF), Medicine by Design is embedded within the Toronto Academic Health Sciences Network (TAHSN), which includes the University of Toronto and its affiliated hospitals, collectively representing one of the strongest regenerative medicine communities in the world. Over the past 7 years, Medicine by Design has invested in more than 190 transformative, high-risk, high-reward research projects with the potential for “moonshot” breakthroughs, recruited 17 new world-class faculty and provided training to over 2000 graduate students. Building on these foundational successes, Medicine by Design is now implementing its 2022 – 2027 strategic plan which is focused on fostering better health for Canadians, enabling a resilient bioeconomy and powering the next generation of forward-thinking bioinnovation leaders.
